Almost 100 different species of the sunflower are found in North America. Tsar Peter the Great introduced the sunflower to Russia and started a national study program on its use and cultivation, which paved the way for its future as a “edible” plant. As a result, large-scale sunflower farming in the US was pioneered by Russian immigrants. Today, Russia, Argentina, China, and the United States produce the most sunflowers for oil.
