The humid regions of North America are the large-fruited cranberry’s native habitat. It served as both food and medicine for America’s original inhabitants, the Indians. Indians taught the first European settlers about cranberries and other flora and animals in the 17th century. Since the fruit was given the name “cran berry” by European immigrants after noticing that the plant’s blossoms resembled the head and beak of a moving crane, this is where the word “cranberry” originates.
